Moving to Portugal

NIF for South Africans moving to Portugal

26 October 2026By Mariana Santos

If you are a South African planning a move, a property purchase or a longer stay in Portugal, the NIF is likely the first Portuguese number anyone asks you for. A NIF is the Portuguese tax identification number, issued by Finanças, the Portuguese tax authority. For Portuguese administration you count as a non-EU/EEA national, and that single fact shapes how you apply: from South Africa, your application is filed by a fiscal representative in Portugal. This guide covers the basics for South Africans, why the NIF usually comes early, the documents that work, the South African details that catch applicants out, and the full cost.

The short answer for South African applicants

  • South African citizens are non-EU/EEA nationals for Portuguese administration, so applying from South Africa means applying through a Portugal-resident fiscal representative.
  • Short visits are generally visa-free for tourism, up to 90 days in any 180. Long stays need a visa route, such as the D7 or the digital nomad D8. The NIF supports that paperwork, but it is not a visa itself.
  • In Portugal already? You can apply in person at a Finanças office, free, with your South African passport and proof of your address in South Africa.
  • Remotely, it costs €99 Standard or €145 Urgent, with 6 months of fiscal representation included.

South African citizens and the NIF: the basics

Portugal runs almost all of its paperwork around the NIF. One nine digit number follows you through tax, banking, contracts and property. It is issued once, it never expires, and you can hold one for years as a non-resident without living in Portugal at all. Getting a NIF does not give you the right to live or work in Portugal, and it does not make you a Portuguese tax resident. Many South Africans visit Portugal visa-free for short stays, generally up to 90 days in any 180 day period for tourism, but entry rules can change, so check the current rules before you travel. Living in Portugal long term takes a visa route of its own, such as the D7 or the digital nomad D8, applied for separately. Think of the NIF as the key that lets the paperwork start, not as permission to stay.

Why South Africans usually need the NIF early

Most South African applicants do not get a NIF because they enjoy paperwork. They get one because something else in the plan stops until it exists:

  • Property purchases. The Algarve and Lisbon draw large numbers of South African buyers, and every buyer needs their own NIF before the promissory contract and the final deed can be signed.
  • Visa application files. D7 and digital nomad D8 applications commonly ask for a Portuguese NIF, so many applicants arrange the number while the visa file is still being prepared.
  • A Portuguese bank account from abroad. Banks open accounts against a NIF, and movers often want the account ready before rent or purchase money moves.
  • School enrolment for families. Schools ask for a NIF for each child, so families moving with children usually file for everyone in one go.
  • Rental contracts. Landlords ask for a NIF on long term rental contracts, and having one ready removes a common delay at signing.

Buying is the most time sensitive of these, because a purchase has sellers, agents and deadlines attached to it. Our guide to the NIF for buying property in Portugal walks through where the number fits in the buying sequence, from reservation to final deed.

Your two routes to a NIF

Remotely, from South Africa. This is the route most South African applicants take. You apply online in about 5 minutes, upload your passport and proof of address, and sign a power of attorney electronically. We check your documents, our representative files with Finanças in Portugal on your behalf, and your official NIF PDF arrives by email. The step by step version of this route is in our guide to getting a Portuguese NIF from outside Portugal.

In person, in Portugal. If you are already in Portugal, or a trip is coming up, you can attend a Finanças office yourself and apply free of charge, with your passport and proof of your address in South Africa. In most cases the number is issued during the visit. If you have wondered whether South Africans can skip the representative altogether and do everything online alone, our guide on getting a NIF without a fiscal representative explains exactly when that is and is not possible.

Documents for South African applicants

  • Your South African passport. Valid, and the same passport you travel and apply for visas on. The NIF application starts from a clear scan or photo of the photo page, and the name Finanças registers is the name exactly as it appears there.
  • Proof of your address in South Africa. Typically a bank statement, or a municipal rates or utility account, in your name, issued within the last 3 months, showing your full address in South Africa. A statement downloaded from your South African bank is fine, as long as your name and address show clearly.
  • Your SA ID is not a Portuguese requirement. The green ID book or smart ID card is a South African domestic document. Portugal does not ask for it, and it cannot replace your passport in a NIF application, so there is no need to send it.
  • Your name must match your passport exactly. Finanças registers the name exactly as it appears in your passport, in the passport order. South African passports often list several given names, so use all of them, in that order, on every form, and flag any document that shortens or reorders your name when you apply.
  • For children, family documents. A child needs their own passport, or supporting documents such as a birth certificate, plus a parent documents. Our guide to getting a NIF for your children and family sets out exactly what each family member needs.

You can check your exact document set in seconds with the free document checklist on our home page.

South Africa-specific practical points

  • Documents in English are fine for the NIF itself. For the NIF application, documents in English are routinely used as they are. Be careful not to confuse this with later visa or residence stages, where other documents may need an apostille or a certified translation. That requirement belongs to those stages, not to the NIF.
  • South African e-statements work as address proof. Bank statements in South Africa are commonly electronic, and a downloaded e-statement is accepted when it shows your name and your full address clearly and is recent. A screenshot with the address cropped off is not.
  • Unabridged birth certificates belong to a later stage. South African families know this document well: unabridged birth certificates are a well known pain point for family visa and residence applications, where they are commonly required. They are not part of the NIF application itself. The one NIF exception is a child who has no passport: that child needs a birth document for the NIF, so order paperwork early and keep the two stages separate in your mind.

Timelines and costs, in the open

Through the remote route, Standard applications are filed and issued in 3 to 5 business days, and Urgent applications in 1 business day where Finanças allows. The price is €99 for Standard or €145 for Urgent per applicant, one payment, VAT included, with no hidden fees. Six months of fiscal representation is included; after that, renewal is €99 per year and you can cancel anytime. The Finanças password is an optional extra at €50 per applicant, useful if you want to sign in to the Portal das Finanças yourself. Families filing together get 5% off the NIF fees. Our guide to how much a NIF costs in Portugal sets out the full cost picture, including the free in-person route.

After you arrive in Portugal

Once you are living in Portugal, two jobs follow. First, register your Portuguese address on your Finanças record, so official letters reach you at home. Second, once that address is registered and electronic notifications are set up, you can usually end the fiscal representation, because Finanças can now write to you directly. Our guides on what a fiscal representative does and on whether you still need one after moving walk through the safe order, which matters: set the new arrangement up first, then cancel.

One honest general note: South Africans who emigrate permanently often also deal with SARS emigration and exchange control questions back home. Those are South African matters, entirely separate from the Portuguese NIF, and this guide offers no advice on them. Deal with them through your own South African advisers.

Common confusions for South African applicants

  • “I can visit visa-free, so I do not need a representative.” The visa-free visit and the NIF application are separate questions. Visiting without a visa does not change how an application from home is filed: from South Africa, it runs through a fiscal representative. The visit simply means you could also use the free in-person route while you are in Portugal.
  • “I should send my SA ID as my identity document.” It does not work for Portugal. The SA ID book or card is a domestic document that Portugal does not ask for. The identity document for a NIF is your passport, and the number Portugal gives you is the NIF itself.
  • “The NIF is my residence permit.” It is not. A NIF is a tax number that paperwork asks for. Your right to live or work in Portugal comes from your visa and residence route, applied for separately.

This guide is general information about the NIF process for South African citizens. It is not legal advice and it is not tax advice. Visa rules and document rules change, and your own circumstances are always worth checking against official sources or with a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

If you apply from South Africa, yes. As a non-EU/EEA applicant living outside Portugal, your application is filed by a Portugal-resident fiscal representative acting under power of attorney. If you are in Portugal, you can instead apply in person at a Finanças office yourself, free of charge, with your passport and proof of your address in South Africa.

Yes, and most South African applicants do exactly that. The remote route runs from your home in South Africa: you apply online, your representative files with Finanças, and your official NIF PDF arrives by email. Standard takes 3 to 5 business days, and Urgent takes 1 business day where Finanças allows.

Two things: your South African passport, and proof of your address in South Africa issued within the last 3 months, such as a bank statement or a municipal rates or utility account showing your name and address clearly. Your SA ID book or card is a South African domestic document and is not required by Portugal, so you do not need to send it for a NIF.

Yes. Finanças registers the name exactly as it appears in your passport, in the passport order. If your passport lists several given names, use all of them, in that order, on every form. If a bank statement or other document shortens your name or lists it differently, flag it when you apply so the difference is explained before filing, not after.

In person at a Finanças office, the NIF itself is free. Through our remote service it is €99 for Standard or €145 for Urgent per applicant, one payment with VAT included, and 6 months of fiscal representation included. Representation renews at €99 per year, cancel anytime, and the optional Finanças password is €50. Families filing together get 5% off the NIF fees.

In general, South Africans can visit Portugal visa-free for short tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period, but entry rules can change, so check the current rules before you travel. A visa-free visit does not change the NIF routes: applying from home still runs through a fiscal representative, and being in Portugal simply opens the free in-person route as well. Staying long term needs a visa route such as the D7 or the digital nomad D8.
