Private by design. The check runs in your browser. The number you type is never sent to us, never stored and never logged.

How the check works

1

Format

A Portuguese NIF has exactly 9 digits and never starts with 0. Spaces are fine, we remove them for you.

2

Check digit

The 9th digit is a control digit. It is calculated from the first eight digits with a fixed formula used by Finanças.

3

Result

We run the same calculation and compare. If the digits do not match, the number has a typo or was copied wrong.

What this check cannot tell you

A valid result means the number follows the official rules. It does not prove the number was issued by Finanças, and it cannot say who it belongs to. There is no public register for that. If a bank or employer questions your number, this check is the quick first step, and our guide to checking your NIF details shows the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Compare it digit by digit with the document or PDF you were given when the number was issued. One swapped pair of digits is the usual cause. If every copy you have fails, ask the office or representative who filed for you, or check your registered details on Portal das Finanças.

Yes, rarely. The checksum catches most typing errors, but a number can be well formed and still belong to someone else, or never have been issued. Only Finanças records confirm a number is really yours.
