NIF for Indian citizens: getting a Portuguese NIF from India

26 October 2026By Mariana Santos

If you are an Indian citizen planning a move, a study place or a property purchase in Portugal, the NIF is likely the first Portuguese number anyone asks you for. A NIF is the Portuguese tax identification number, issued by Finanças, the Portuguese tax authority. For Portuguese administration you count as a non-EU/EEA national, and that single fact shapes how you apply: from India, your application is filed by a fiscal representative in Portugal. This guide covers the basics for Indian citizens, why the NIF usually comes early, the documents that work, the name and address details that catch Indian applicants out, the student route, and the full cost.

The short answer for Indian applicants

  • Indian citizens are non-EU/EEA nationals for Portuguese administration, so applying from India means applying through a Portugal-resident fiscal representative.
  • Long stays need a visa route, such as the D7, the digital nomad D8 or a work visa. The NIF supports that paperwork, but it is not a visa itself.
  • In Portugal already? You can apply in person at a Finanças office, free, with your Indian passport and proof of your address in India.
  • Remotely, it costs €99 Standard or €145 Urgent, with 6 months of fiscal representation included.

Indian citizens and the NIF: the basics

Portugal runs almost all of its paperwork around the NIF. One nine digit number follows you through tax, banking, contracts and property. It is issued once, it never expires, and you can hold one for years as a non-resident without living in Portugal at all. Getting a NIF does not give you the right to live or work in Portugal, and it does not make you a Portuguese tax resident. Long stays need their own route: a visa such as the D7, the digital nomad D8 or a work visa, applied for separately. Think of the NIF as the key that lets the paperwork start, not as permission to stay.

Why Indians usually need the NIF early

Most Indian applicants do not get a NIF because they enjoy paperwork. They get one because something else in the plan stops until it exists:

  • Visa application files. D7, D8 and work visa applications commonly ask for a Portuguese NIF, so many applicants arrange the number while the visa file is still being prepared.
  • A Portuguese bank account from abroad. Banks open accounts against a NIF, and movers often want the account ready before rent or purchase money moves.
  • University enrolment. Portugal welcomes large numbers of Indian students, and enrolment, student housing contracts and university services all run more smoothly with a NIF already in place.
  • Employment paperwork. Employers record your NIF for contracts and payroll, so having it before you start removes a common first week delay.
  • Property and rental contracts. Every buyer needs their own NIF before signing, and landlords ask for one on rental contracts too.

Your two routes to a NIF

Remotely, from India. This is the route most Indian applicants take. You apply online in about 5 minutes, upload your passport and proof of address, and sign a power of attorney electronically. We check your documents, our representative files with Finanças in Portugal on your behalf, and your official NIF PDF arrives by email. The step by step version of this route is in our guide to getting a Portuguese NIF from outside Portugal.

In person, in Portugal. If you are already in Portugal, or a trip is coming up, you can attend a Finanças office yourself and apply free of charge, with your passport and proof of your address in India. In most cases the number is issued during the visit. If you have wondered whether Indian citizens can skip the representative altogether and do everything online alone, our guide on getting a NIF without a fiscal representative explains exactly when that is and is not possible.

Documents for Indian applicants

  • Your Indian passport. Valid, and the same passport you travel and apply for visas on. The NIF application starts from a clear scan or photo of the photo page, and the name Finanças registers is the name exactly as it appears there.
  • Proof of your address in India. Typically a bank statement or a utility bill in your name, issued within the last 3 months, showing your full address in India. A statement downloaded from your Indian bank is fine, as long as your name and address show clearly.
  • Aadhaar is not a Portuguese requirement. Aadhaar is an Indian domestic document. Portugal does not ask for it, and it cannot be used as proof of address for a NIF application, so there is no need to send it.
  • Your name must match your passport exactly. This is the detail that catches Indian applicants out most often. Names are recorded differently across Indian documents: initials in one place, expanded names in another, a different order somewhere else. Finanças registers the passport version, so use the passport spelling, order and expansions on every form, and flag any mismatch on your other documents when you apply.
  • For children, family documents. A child needs their own passport, or supporting documents such as a birth certificate, plus a parent documents. Our guide to getting a NIF for your children and family sets out exactly what each family member needs.

You can check your exact document set in seconds with the free document checklist on our home page.

India-specific practical points

  • Documents in English are fine for the NIF itself. For the NIF application, documents in English are routinely used as they are. Be careful not to confuse this with later visa or residence stages, where other documents may need an apostille or a certified translation. That requirement belongs to those stages, not to the NIF.
  • Indian bank statements work as address proof. Statements from Indian banks are accepted when they show your name and your full address clearly and are recent. A downloaded e-statement is fine; a screenshot with the address cropped off is not.
  • No apostille is needed for the NIF application itself. The passport and address proof you file for a NIF do not need an apostille. Later visa stages have their own separate document rules, which may include apostilles, and those rules apply at that stage, not this one.

Indian students in Portugal

Indian students are one of the largest groups arriving in Portugal each year, and the NIF sits near the start of student life too. Enrolment forms ask for it, student housing contracts are written against it, and university services from library accounts to part time job registrations run more smoothly once it exists. Most students arrange the NIF before travelling, alongside the visa file, or in the first days after arriving.

One number students meet later is the NISS, the Portuguese social security number. You do not need it to enrol, but if you take part time work alongside your studies, your employer will need it for your contract and contributions. Our guide to NIF vs NISS vs SNS number separates the three numbers cleanly: which office issues each one, what each is for, and the order to get them in.

Timelines and costs, in the open

Through the remote route, Standard applications are filed and issued in 3 to 5 business days, and Urgent applications in 1 business day where Finanças allows. The price is €99 for Standard or €145 for Urgent per applicant, one payment, VAT included, with no hidden fees. Six months of fiscal representation is included; after that, renewal is €99 per year and you can cancel anytime. The Finanças password is an optional extra at €50 per applicant, useful if you want to sign in to the Portal das Finanças yourself. Families filing together get 5% off the NIF fees. Our guide to how much a NIF costs in Portugal sets out the full cost picture, including the free in-person route.

After you arrive in Portugal

Once you are living in Portugal, two jobs follow. First, register your Portuguese address on your Finanças record, so official letters reach you at home. Second, once that address is registered and electronic notifications are set up, you can usually end the fiscal representation, because Finanças can now write to you directly. Our guides on what a fiscal representative does and on whether you still need one after moving walk through the safe order, which matters: set the new arrangement up first, then cancel.

Common confusions for Indian applicants

  • “I should send my Aadhaar or PAN as my identity document.” Neither works for Portugal. PAN is India’s tax card, and it has no role in a Portuguese application. Aadhaar is an Indian domestic document that Portugal does not ask for. The identity document for a NIF is your passport, and the tax number Portugal gives you is the NIF itself.
  • “I need a Portuguese address before I can apply.” You do not. As a non-resident, your fiscal representative address in Portugal is your official tax address until you move and register your own. Needing a Portuguese address first would make the remote route impossible, and the remote route is exactly how most Indian applicants apply.
  • “The NIF is my visa.” It is not. A NIF is a tax number that paperwork asks for. Your right to live, study or work in Portugal comes from your visa and residence route, applied for separately.

This guide is general information about the NIF process for Indian citizens. It is not legal advice and it is not tax advice. Visa rules and document rules change, and your own circumstances are always worth checking against official sources or with a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

If you apply from India, yes. As a non-EU/EEA applicant living outside Portugal, your application is filed by a Portugal-resident fiscal representative acting under power of attorney. If you are in Portugal, you can instead apply in person at a Finanças office yourself, free of charge, with your passport and proof of your address in India.

Yes, and most Indian applicants do exactly that. The remote route runs from your home in India: you apply online, your representative files with Finanças, and your official NIF PDF arrives by email. Standard takes 3 to 5 business days, and Urgent takes 1 business day where Finanças allows.

Two things: your Indian passport, and proof of your address in India issued within the last 3 months, such as a bank statement or a utility bill showing your name and address clearly. Aadhaar and PAN are Indian domestic documents and are not Portuguese requirements, so you do not need to send them for a NIF.

Yes. Finanças registers the name exactly as it appears in your passport, including the name order and any expansions of initials. Use the passport spelling on every form and document. If your bank statement or other documents record your name differently, flag it when you apply so the mismatch is explained before filing, not after.

In person at a Finanças office, the NIF itself is free. Through our remote service it is €99 for Standard or €145 for Urgent per applicant, one payment with VAT included, and 6 months of fiscal representation included. Representation renews at €99 per year, cancel anytime, and the optional Finanças password is €50. Families filing together get 5% off the NIF fees.

In practice, yes. Enrolment forms, student housing contracts and university services all ask for a NIF, so most Indian students arrange one before or just after arriving. If you take part time work alongside your studies, your employer will also need your NISS, the social security number, which is a separate registration covered in our NIF vs NISS vs SNS guide.
